A Moving Face
Is Evidence, Not Identity
Lag, blur and poor lip sync can come from an ordinary network. Manipulation is possible, but no single visual glitch proves it.
Use proportional checks// weak and stronger signals
Look for patterns, not one glitch
Weak alone: low resolution, frozen frames, delayed audio, odd lighting or a blurred background. More concerning together: the same motion loop, refusal to respond to current conversation, lighting that changes only around the face, repeated audio with identical timing, or pressure to send money while avoiding independent contact.
Virtual cameras also have legitimate uses—accessibility, production, privacy backgrounds and demonstrations. The tool itself is not proof of fraud.
// safe liveness
Ask for interaction, not a biometric performance
Refer to something that just happened: “What did you think of the question I asked?” or “Could you say that last part again?” Do not demand government ID, intimate acts, a face scan or a humiliating gesture. A scammer can pass simple gestures, and a genuine person can refuse invasive tests.
// verify the claim elsewhere
The story matters more than the pixels
If someone claims to represent a bank, employer or government office, end the call and contact that organization through independently located details. If the story leads to crypto, gift cards, a verification code or remote access, stop regardless of how convincing the video looks.
// avoid false certainty
Why common “deepfake tests” can mislead
Asking someone to turn sideways, wave or name the date may catch a simple replay. Modern manipulation and ordinary people can both pass or fail these tasks, so the result is not identity proof.
Network artifacts
Compression can distort teeth, glasses, hair and hand movement. Look for persistence across conditions, not a single frame from a congested connection.
Independent channel
For a consequential claim, verify through an official contact you locate yourself. A second account supplied by the same person is not independent.
Proportionate response
You do not need to diagnose the technology. Decline money, credentials, intimate acts and remote access; leave when the story or pressure is unsafe.
The goal is not to prove “fake” to the other person. It is to keep an uncertain signal from authorizing an irreversible action.
